“Sasaki Sushi Takeaway: Affordable, Decent Japanese”

What’s available?

Back in September 2023, Sasaki Sushi started serving in the area of Stoneybatter, Dublin 7. With a wide variety of dining and takeaway options, their menu boasts sushi, gyoza, wok-cooked rice and noodles, tempura, teriyaki, ramen, and bento box meals. Sophia Zhang, the co-proprietor, compares it to the revival of Kurado Sushi – an establishment previously found in Stoneybatter, Dublin 2, and Dún Laoghaire. After Kurado Sushi had to shut its doors due to the Covid situation and Sophia’s business associates switched industries, Zhang joined forces with a new business partner, Paul Lin. Lin, who had garnered experience as a chef at Taro Sushi, assists Zhang in carrying out her passion.

When it came to delivery, there was a short lapse due to a family loss and a tight workforce, which left her out of the country. Taking that into account, I opted to pick my order up. Upon arrival, it seemed reasonable to dine in at their small establishment instead of heading back home. Their bring your own booze policy resulted in a fair number of people digging into their sushi and ramen amidst the rain on a Tuesday evening.

What was on our plates?

Our order consisted of chicken gyoza, tuna and avocado norimaki, yomato tofu norimaki and shrimp tempura.

How was the overall experience?

The service was quite delightful and came with a tolerable waiting time.

What about the food?

The gyoza consisted of six hot, crispy pieces accompanied by a tangy dip. In addition, eight pieces of tuna and avocado norimaki were served alongside pickled ginger, soy sauce, and wasabi, akin to the tofu norimaki, which also came with cucumber and pressed tofu. As is the trend, the rice is usually quite firm and cold, hinting at early preparation. The shrimp tempura was delectably warm with a crunchy exterior.

And the packaging?

Takeaway meals are usually packed in paper bags with a combination of reusable plastic and cardboard containers, which can be heated in a microwave.

What was the damage bill?

For a meal that serves three, an expenditure of €33.85 was incurred on Chicken gyoza priced at €6, tuna avocado norimaki costing €8.90, yomato tofu norimaki worth €6.95, and ebi tempura valued at €12. Sasaki Sushi dispatches their orders every day from 5pm to 11pm, and its offerings slightly differ depending on whether you’re browsing their website or Deliveroo. However, all deliveries, within a range of 5km, are executed by Deliveroo. Collection service is also provided. Reflecting on my experience, I would personally prefer to dine at the restaurant as opposed to getting a home delivery. Yet, the quality of the sushi aligns with other providers I’ve sampled, with the bonus of being slightly less expensive.
