Oscars: Identifying the Deserving Winners and Predicting the Actual Ones

When it comes to the Best Actor honour at the 96th Academy Awards this Sunday, Cillian Murphy appears to have no competition. But who are the other deserving participants and who will secure a win?

Donald Clarke, the senior film reporter for the Irish Times, observes the Oscars to be favouring Oppenheimer this year. However, could Barbie snag a surprise victory? Is there also an opportunity for Yorgos Lanthimos’s Poor Things, a production of the Dublin’s Element Pictures, to make a significant impact?

A lot was anticipated from The Banshees of Inisherin the previous year, with it accruing nine nominations. Sadly, the film didn’t score a victory in any category. Will Poor Things, with its 11 nominations, suffer a similar fate?

Organisers are anxious over the lingering silence regarding the Gaza dispute, which has continued through the awards season. This silence could potentially be broken by an award winner – once they have collected their trophy, according to Clarke.

The event will be hosted by Bernice Harrison and overseen by producer John Casey.
