Always scrutinise the fine print on election banners

Dear Editor,

It is quite an ongoing trend for political parties struggling in polls to resort to subdued party logos and branding in their advertising. Yet, in a rather humorously exaggerated move, Aodhán Ó Ríordáin TD, a candidate in the European elections representing Dublin for the Labour Party, has taken this convention to new extremes.

The display of the Labour emblem on his campaign posters is near microscopic, a sight one might strain the eyes to see. Remarkably, for what may certainly be the first instance for an Irish party, their European counterpart’s symbol – the Party of European Socialists – is displayed in a notably larger font. Moreover, the chosen colour scheme is strikingly similar to those of the Social Democrats.

Upon his selection as a representative in January, Ó Ríordáin expressed great pride in the opportunity to “wave the Labour flag around Dublin”. However, it’s unfortunate that these flags barely feature the term “Labour”.

Yours faithfully,
Barry Walsh
